With the 2021 World Championships underway, I decided to list all the examples in women’s gymnastics where a program accomplished history for itself in Kitakyushu. Some nations have accomplished feats for the first time in years, others have accomplished said feats for the first time ever.
All records are defined by Group-1 results (World Championships and/or Olympics) they are contingent on the current qualifying standings as is and may be subject to change based on injury withdrawals.
Egypt: Nancy Taman became Egypt’s first ever gymnast to qualify to Event Finals as well as the first gymnast from the African continent to do so.
Israel: Ofir Netzer became Israel’s first ever gymnast to qualify to Event Finals.
Portugal: Filipa Martins became the first ever Portuguese gymnast to qualify to an Event Finals
Romania: Maria Ceplinschi became the first Romanian gymnast since Catalina Ponor (2016 Olympics) to advance to an Event Finals
Hungary: Csenge Bacskay and Zsofia Kovacs became the first Hungarian gymnasts to qualify to an Event Finals since Adrienn Varga (1997 World Championships).
Mexico: Natalia Escalera became the 5th gymnast in program history to qualify to an Event Finals (Denisse Lopez, Brenda Magana, Elsa Garcia, and Alexa Moreno). Natalia Escalera maintains Mexico’s streak of having an Event Finals appearance in the last four consecutive World Championships/Olympics as well as 6 of the last 8 going back to 2014.
Ukraine: Anastasia Bachynska became the 3rd Ukrainian gymnast since 2010 to advance to an Event Finals (Yana Demyanchuk in 2010 and Diana Varinska in 2017).
Ireland: Emma Slevin became the first Irish gymnast in women’s gymnastics to qualify to a finals in any individual event.
Brazil: Rebeca Andrade becomes the first Brazilian gymnast to qualify to three different Event Finals in the same competition. Previously the Brazilian record was two in the same competition which had occurred with Lais Souza (2006), Jade Barbosa (2007), Flavia Saraiva (2019), and Rebeca herself at the 2021 Olympics.
Andrade also becomes the first Brazilian gymnast to ever qualify to Event Finals on all four apparatuses over the course of her career. Previously, the Brazilian record was no more than two apparatuses by the previously mentioned gymnasts.

This is a brilliant blog post, and how exciting for Nancy Taman and Egypt! What a great start to a world championships, to see this many firsts after qualifications. I’m hoping there’ll be even more firsts once the finals start.

I guess this is one way to look at the bright side of the fact that so many gymnasts decided not to compete at a World Championships. Or if they did, not on all the events. Seriously, 1/5 of the reigning Olympic champions being here is a woeful statistic. I enjoyed a prior article you wrote regarding other post-Olympic Worlds, and this meet is unlike any other that’s happened in my lifetime. Even the individual event Worlds in 1992, 1996, and 2002 had better fields.
