Previously I ranked the strongest programs in women’s artistic gymnastics (WAG) by applying my points system to their performance in the team competition. Now I’m doing something slightly different where I rank programs by the total number of medals won in the team competition.
Whereas before I was differentiating between gold and bronze medals, this time I’m not. This list is purely a “medal leaders” list for programs in the team competition. Relevant disclaimers are at the bottom of the data.
Country | Total Medals |
Romania | 27 |
Soviet Union | 24 |
United States | 23 |
Russia | 16 |
China | 16 |
Czechoslovakia | 13 |
East Germany | 13 |
Hungary | 8 |
Italy | 3 |
Japan | 3 |
Great Britain | 3 |
Poland | 2 |
Australia | 1 |
France | 1 |
Germany | 1 |
Netherlands | 1 |
Sweden | 1 |
Ukraine | 1 |
Yugoslavia | 1 |

(A) Only team medals won in women’s artistic gymnastics at the World Championships and Olympics are counted.
(B) Team medals won in the discontinued event of “Team Portable Apparatus” are not counted (1952 & 1956).
(C) The Soviet Union is credited for the gold medal won at the 1992 Olympics while Russia is credited with the gold medal won at the 2021 Olympics.
(D) China is credited with both of its stripped medals at the 1999 World Championships and 2000 Olympics. Ukraine and the United States are also credited with these medals and the data treats both competitions as a tie for bronze.

Would love to see the years these team medals were won.
Don’t think China should receive credit for 99 and 00 team medals though since they belong to Ukraine and USA.
