The current queen of gymnastics. Simone Biles is widely considered the greatest gymnast in history. Simone has made a habit out of routinely tearing down records and milestones that have existed for decades. At the 2016 Olympics she posted the highest margin of victory in 66 years. At the 2018 World Championships she became the first gymnast in 30 years to win a medal on every event. The following year at the 2019 World Championships she won four gold medals in the five individual events. The only other times that happened came in 1968, 1958, 1950, and 1938.

To sum up Simone Biles, she is bringing a style of dominance that last existed in the 1950s and 1960s, which occurred in an era when gymnastics was less developed. Biles is doing it in the modern era where there are not only a far greater number of countries with well funded women’s gymnastics programs, but has to compete alongside specialists. Simone isn’t just outperforming her AA rivals across all four events. But specialists who spend the majority of their training time specifically on one apparatus with one specific gold medal in mind. In modern times it is supposed to be incredibly difficult if not impossible to dominate a wide range of events as Simone has done. Yet Simone finds a way.

As if dominating the medal count wasn’t enough, Simone’s most recent streak of success has been blowing up the Code of Points trying to get as many high-level named skills as possible. In 2018 she debuted an upgraded version of the Cheng on vault, in 2019 she debuted a double-twisting, double tucked salto dismount on beam, and in 2021 she debuted another upgraded vault. This time a double piked Yurchenko.

  1. There are a thousand gymnasts that would have liked to compete in Tokyo. She took a spot from someone who worked just as hard and got cut.
